Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005) is regarded as one of the world's leading theorists in respect of developmental psychology. It was he who developed an Ecological Theory (1979) to explain how influences within a child's environment will affect how that child grows and develops.

Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory is one of the most accepted explanations regarding the influence of social environments on human development. This theory argues that the environment you grow up in affects every facet of your life. Social factors determine your way of thinking, the emotions you feel, and your likes and dislikes. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory focuses on the quality and context of the child’s environment. He states that as a child develops, the interaction within these environments becomes more complex.
